Whether you’re looking to sell your Toronto home or beautify the one you’ve just moved into, you can benefit from good landscaping. It always feels nice to come home to an aesthetically pleasing yard, and a good first impression is crucial to potential homebuyers. Here are some tips on how to spruce up your curb appeal with landscaping.

Start with a Plan

Don’t start planting things willy-nilly. Make a list of what you need and want from your landscaping, take into account your amount of space, and do some research about what type of landscape would fit your house.

Find a Focal Point

The best garden designs have one or more focal points, often in the form of sculptures, fountains, trees, or seating areas. Once you determine the focal point(s), you can plan your design so that it takes one’s eyes around the yard and to that point.

Focus on Scale and Pacing

Careful consideration and implementation of scale and pacing will give your yard a more complete look. Finding the right balance between repetition and new elements, whether it’s in the size, shape, or colour of the plants, or the species of plants themselves, will make the garden exciting without being monotonous or overwhelming.

Consider the Maintenance

Speaking of overwhelming, a garden that requires a lot of maintenance can cause you stress in the long run and look too challenging for a potential homebuyer to maintain. Make your garden beginner-friendly with a unified design and clean borders, low maintenance perennials (flowers you only plant once that will bloom every year), and bushes and shrubs that don’t require too much trimming.

Provide a Path

If you want people to actually be able to make it through your front yard to your front door or around your backyard to the various points of interest, provide an easy-to-follow path that will lead them there. Feel free to get creative with your walkway; think stepping stones, natural flagstone, decorative brick, or crushed stone. This is your design!
